In his work entitled *Sacred clowns* Tony Hillerman writes ~ *.... This business of hozho. The way I understand it ... I’ll use an example. Terrible drought, crops dead, sheep dying. Spring dried out. No water. The Hopi, or the Christian, maybe the Moslem, they pray for rain. The Navajo has the proper ceremony done to restore himself to harmony with the drought. You see what I mean. The system is designed to recognize what’s beyond human power to change, and then to change the human’s attitude to be content with the inevitable.* : The truth is, Dreams Help Us Adjust in exactly the same way . . .

Weather In Dreams : Water

July 23rd 2008 09:03

WATER in our dreams : Symbolises our Emotions, pure and simple.

Water also represents the mysterious feminine principles. By its nature it remains a mysterious substance, which like the emotions can flow through, over and round anything physical or intellectual. Like emotions too, water is soft and yielding and has the ability to wear away anything which gets in its way. Water brings fertility to the land, enabling growth of the new shoots. It transcends its earthly existence as steam, and rises towards heaven, revealing our hidden potentials, enabling us to create new life in response to our own urgings, be they through reproduction, or creative endeavour.

Whipped and tossed about by the weather, water usually augurs out-of-control conditions ... Floods, rain, huge waves, deep stormy oceans ... all disturbing. They reflect the fears of our emotions overwhelming us in some way. Anger, passion, depression, the truth is that by being overcome by water in our dreams, we begin to gain the very confidence we need to master our emotions in our waking world.

A noticeable cleansing effect and change to our waking circumstances, usually follows a dream of catastrophic watery weather, often after a period of moderate mourning is traversed.

Actually Entering Water ~ in any dream, indicates spiritual re-birth and the beginning of something new in your waking world.

Drowning ~ A disturbing dream, which is highlighting your habit of pushing things into the unconscious, rather than dealing with them, which only results in them emerging (eventually) as a force which cannot be overcome!

Deluge/Floods ~ Frightening? Sure ... but fascinating too, because those huge volumes of water, symbolise the release of positive energy. They reveal the chaotic side of our nature, usually uncontrollable, but needing attention NOW; suddenly threatening to overwhelm us ...

Psychologically, floods mark the end of a cycle of our lives and the beginning of another. Old grievances and emotional cobwebs are washed away, leaving a clear head and a clean way forward, but not without some upheaval to our routines ... Therefore the dream-flood, when it comes, represents the overflow and outpouring of long-repressed or unconscious feelings, which must now be gotten out of the way, in order for real progress to take place. Whilst no one welcomes floods - real or dreamed - they are a necessary tool of cleansing, change and renewal.

Flooded Rivers and Streams : represent your life and the path you have chosen to live it. Much depends on your attitude as to whether you will see your life as a large river, or a small river. Many tributaries here, can suggest scattered energies, which may need damming.

To See the Waters Rising : indicates that there is still time for you to address the situation that you are avoiding ... but time is running short, and change imminent.

To Find Yourself In The Middle of the Flood : indicates that you are indeed feeling overwhelmed by your feelings ... and probably trying to hold back the water in your dream too? Try to remember to let go and see how high the water’s rise, and if fully, just where the current takes you?

Would letting go of trying to control your every waking situation really mean the end of the world?

To Be Watching a Flood : is said to suggest that we are simply watching ourselves ... the ebb and flow of our emotions, all helping us come to terms with and translate the expression of our feelings, verbally. (Make a note of any objects you see in either the water itself, or on the shoreline as these will bear very important clues as to the intrinsic nature of your emotional state, goals and blockages).

Sometimes seeing great floods can indicate an oncoming period of depression. This is not to be feared as depression is a tool we also use to assess what is not working and help make the changes we need to start a new life. It is just a deeper more profound change, is all. Again, ultimately, not a permanent condition; unless this dream repeats continuously for weeks (even months), in which case you should seek out a doctor and/or some mental health counselling.

Rushing Water : is a clear indication of passion and your fear of being overcome by it. Rushing rivers are often a sign that life is moving too fast for you to absorb the deeper meanings. If the water here is also muddy, be on special lookout for someone (or some situation) which makes you feel morally soiled, or dirty or defiled in some way.

To be Going Down into the Water :
indicates your deep need to renew your strength, to go back to the beginning. Be sure to take some time out following this dream.

To be Rising Up Out Of the Water :
suggests you will be able to make a fresh start.

To Traverse the Water (as in a Boat/surfboard etc) : means, continued indecision and/or a lack of emotional commitment are indicated.

Fog ~ Marks the confusion and inability we are feeling to confront (or even to see) the real issues at stake in our lives. A mix of Air (Intellect) and Water (emotion), and a lack of sun (clarity) ... Fog indicates a degree of spiritual doubt and uncertainty causing us to feel directionless. This is often through a lack of being able to (or willing to) look objectively at the external matter and the impact it may be having on us.

Remember external circumstances are always there as often a mere reflection of your internal mental, emotional and spiritual balance(or imbalance) ... a physical projection for you to work through.

Luckily, Fogs are only a short-term weather phenomenon and indicate that your aimless wandering will most likely be of short duration, as these three areas come back into balance in your waking life. Ironically, often as a result of dreaming of fog in the first place!

To Be Walking In a Fog : is a warning that matters you now consider important are being clouded by other peoples judgement overriding your own. It may be wiser for you to sit still and look more closely in order to understand things fully, (from your perspective), rather than rushing headlong into the foray all WillyNilly.

Hail ~ Because it is frozen (like Ice), it means your emotions are also frozen solid. Because hail falls from the sky (Air/Intellect), its appearance suggests that your emotions have been frozen by a mental knee jerk reaction to outside circumstances. This in itself is not always a bad thing ...

Whilst the Gypsys believe that to dream of hail denotes great sorrow and trouble to the dreamer, and that if it is also accompanied by tempest, thunder and lightning, it can mean an illness or affliction; Artemidorus (c.120AD) wrote in his five/volume Dream book, Oneirocritica, ...that hail predicts a period of tranquillity to the poor who dream of it, because ...during storms they rest.

These days, rich or poor, Hail is best understood as a part of the cycle of nature, where we can appreciate that numbing our emotions can, at times, be the most appropriate thing to do to protect ourselves ... and as with all weather conditions; does not foretell a permanent condition, even if the hail has set in for a while.

Simply put, emotions connected to spirituality must sometimes be held in check as a failsafe against outside stimulus. Emotions frozen in order to process, absorb and integrate new circumstances, are a good protection mechanism to say the least.

Particularly hard to digest truths (like the loss of a loved one), are often symbolised by dreams of great hail storms and ice sheets - our emotional bodies on hold, cocooned within the ice itself, whilst our spirit and intellect realign and adjust in times of radical changes.

Rain ~ In its simplest form, is telling us about emotional release. Perhaps at times when crying in the waking world is just not appropriate to the current circumstances?

Pure and simple, the rain we see, hear, feel or experience in our dreams, all represents the clearing of long repressed emotions, depressed feelings and anxiety. Rain is can be seen as an active image of guilt, sadness, depression or grief, all being washed away.

Rain in a Womans Dream : can suggest suppressed feelings about the sexual act itself, or a period of intense fertility with regards to creative projects.

If The Rain is Light and Refreshing (as in a spring shower) : expect some much needed changes to come into your life very soon, boosting your spiritual well-being.

The Gypsys are not alone in holding the opinion that Heavy Rains in your dream spells troubles ahead, be prepared for some resistance and/or obstacles.

Snow ~ Not as hard as ice, snow still represents the crystallisation of the emotions, ideas or a project and again relates to frigidity, or coldness of spirit. However, here, seen as beautiful soft, white snow; the message is more optimistic and said to be an overall symbol of prosperity. Snow represents purity, beauty and a period of rest. When conditions are right - the melting away of snow (difficulties), from which the dreamer will also escape.

Oceans ~ are as vast as our consciousness - omni-present, personal or collective - they represent the original chaotic state from which all life emerges. As such and as inherent in that state as Air itself, are Knowledge (completeness), although that is often obscured by our fears of the vast depths.

We do not fear that which we understand, and should not fear that which we dont either, for how would we learn new things?

A Stormy Seas : is perhaps the worst place to be adrift in any weather, but worse still when there is thunder and lightning, for it indicates complete calamity in your waking world. It marks a period of time in which some deep soul searching will be required in order to be able to see your way ahead through all the upheaval that are upon you.

No doubts about it, you have a life altering decision to make and no way out of making it.

My advice here is to go with the flow and see where it takes you. Take note of other objects that appear and disappear; people and places, is it night or day, etc. Do not worry about drowning, as I promise you that you will wake up should that happen!

(see Drowning above).

Waves/ Tsunami ~ again, another major emotional symbol, this time more sexual in nature. It’s time to differentiate between love and lust, will and action. The bigger the waves the more powerful the emotions and need for acurate differentiation.

To Be Aware of the Tides (particularly for women) :
is said to be aware of the ebb and flow of emotions. Our cycles, postive to negative, high and low, quiet and rowdy, passive and aggressive ... so on and so forth.

Waterfall ~ Good or bad weather, this form of water is held to be a very positive sign that you will eventually overcome all your obstacles and secure your wildest desires. If it is a clear sunny day, or there is a spring rain shower, it is said that fortune will be exceedingly favourable to you.

Whirlpools ~ Deserve a special mention here, because like Whirlwinds (See AIR CLICKHERE), both are images of vortexes, which in turn, represent our natural energy and life force itself. They can be conflicting energies in both cases, but when seen as a whirlpool, mark our awareness of the power we have within us to create or destroy.

The Whirlwind; of the intellectual power, the whirlpool; of the emotional energy.

A whirl of creativity lies ahead, and if you are sucked down into the depths, then you must try and swim with it. No doubts you will be trying to regain control over your waking life and the endless round of activity, which appears to be unproductive, yet contains much energy when viewed differently.

The Gypsys however maintain that to dream of a whirlpool is a warning of physical danger ahead, particularly headaches and vertigo, inner ear infections and minor accidents.

Best advice : Take your time, look whre you are going.

Hey Lilla,

I have lots of dreams about the ocean. I can usually guess what they mean - sometimes I'm drifting along in a calm sea, swimming but not really getting anywhere, sometimes there are waves crashing over me. Sometimes when I dream I'm just looking at the ocean I think it's because I miss living right on the coast!

Hi Lilla,

I'm a bit scared to have my dreams interpreted. I'm worried it will reveal something I'm not ready to hear. I'm pretty honest with myself....lots of introspective soul searching. There are a few demons there that I have to deal with. I just don't have the time to deal with new ones

I don't usually remember my dreams but I have had a few doozies that I remember to this day.

I've had those where I'm running down the street naked.

I've had a few where I'm trying to run away from someone but feel like I'm running on the spot and when I try to scream, nothing comes out.

Anyways.... I hope I dream nice tonight

Love & stuff

Excellent post, Lilla. I love dream interpretation. But you know what's odd? I don't think I've ever dreamt about water in any shape or form...hmm...i find that very odd.

Michaelie,

Quite right ... it looks like you traverse and realte to you emotions directly with self-honesty, that is indeed a blessing.

It also sounds like you need the sea... especially if you are a water sign, or have a degree of major planet(s) [or elements] in water signs... I too need to connect with the sea at least once a month, and when recognising this fact, I made sure that I was living no more than 20 minuties away from it.

You could say that at 45 years of age, I had a Sea Change.

The thing is when I spent 13 years living far inland, like you, I would also dream of the sea... oceans and shorelines I had known in previous addresses ... and there my nightly storms would rage and waves would pound, I drowned often *chuckle* ... all signalling the very deep need I had of the ocean itself and my need to look at that issue!

You are spot on and I hope you are able to re-manifest an address closer to it in time to come?

Dear Mrs M,

I can promise you one thing about dream analysis, you wont find anything you were not born with, to start with... in fact you will only find yourself, and I am sure that you have nothing to worry about there. We all have shadows intermixed with the our light, do we not? *chuckle* Perhaps for me, the greatest thing about dream interpretation has been the ability to shed some light into the shadowy alleyways of my psyche?

As for your running it has many connotations. To run towards something is always a positive sign of your awareness of the life force within, it is a sign of speed and flow and exuberance ~ as well as vitality, stamina and endurance all marking confidence and ability.
Running away is more sinister and suggests avoidance, either of emotions, fears or responsibilities, always dependant on the context of the dream (and the other symbology present) : time, place, environment are really important here; all indicating why speed is required here?), suffice to say running away in general has strongly come to be identified with fear and an inability to do something, or that spiritually, we may be trying to do something too quickly?

... being naked gives you the clue as to what (and who)....?

For example : the Gypsys will tell you that dreaming of being naked is invariably ominous and a sure sign of pending sickness, poverty, affront, or fatigue.

However throughout the years it has come to be recognised as much more esoteric in that it also represents a freedom of social restraint, and new beginnings, often through major life changes. Of course as we would expect, Freud attributed dreams of nakedness to sexuality ~ what else? ... but he wasnt far off as in essence nudity in dreams is about self image; and psychologically, our naivety.

It shows a need to be seen as we are, to reveal our essential personality without having to create a facade... much will depend on whether you are seen by other people running away naked or towards something whilst naked? To be seen by others means you have something about yourself you wish to reveal. If you are alone in this dream the suggestion is simply one of having the wish of freedom and expression.

There may be a situation in your life which requires honesty and truth now, more than anything?

Running away from someone is about trying to run from a part of yourself that is screaming to be heard ... this part of yourself must be integrated and bought to the light, now!

See not to scary at all...

Sweet dreams indeed ...

Hello Aimszter,

Thanks for the compliment ...and indeed, very interesting, to be sure.

Perhaps you just dont remember?

Water is perhaps one of the commonest of my dreams and most of the people I interpret for (or talk to) *chuckle* maybe we are just all emotional messes and you are sorted?

On the other hand, sometimes the waves are just too high, the oceans too deep and the floods to scary to even contemplate traversing...?

As I recall, water dreams are rarely pleasant and always filled with anxiety and stress, I wouldnt worry about not having them, truly

Hmmm Louie,

...what can I say?

There is obviously something pestering you which needs listening too / adressing?

The only advice I have is not to resist the future at this stage, as the angels will already be gathering there in your personal timeline, to assist any transitions (to the next level) ... nothing too scary, I bet...

You'll let me know, right?

Hi Lilla

I had a dream last night about a massive Tsunami. I was with old school friends and we scampered up this mountain to watch the coming wall of water which eventually swallowed us up. On the hill there was a memorial for the last Tsunami which happened in 1314 and an old ruin of a temple/lookout. Before the Tsunami occured we were watching some event (swimming maybe?) and looked up into the sky where there were thousands of ducks flying above us, all in the shape of a dove. It started raining, which got harder and harder and then we saw this tsunami coming in the distance.

Weather is certainly an interesting one, that`s for sure! Thanks for all the info as always, I love waking fresh from a dream and sitting with my tea and perusing your pages to find out the next installment of what`s happening

Hi Ash,

hmmm interesting dream... well I can understand about being worried about being swamped by a huge emotion (which by being in the Tsunami indicates that at alast, you are dealing with those very drives and emotions in the first place) [well done] .. so what is perhaps the most important point is how we fared during the deluge itself .. and, if you survived, HOW?

These facts should point you towards some very interesting revelations as to your own future developments?

Lovely to see you about again btw, will make it so in reality soon too, hey?

Lilla,

Interesting post as usual! I love reading about dreams. One of my recurring nightmares sort of includes water - it involves this giant, metallic (and maybe liquid?) ball that just starts dropping down. There's no one else there except this ball. I've been having it since I was little. I don't know why, but it scares the hell out of me.

Hi Dean,

mmm ... a tricky one, which needs to be broken down perhaps?

Dreams of balls (as in the fun playful ones) represent just that and usually point to your need to have some (real) fun through the need to express the childlike side of ourselves. Balls talk of the need to express ourselves with a freedom found in non-suffering.

We know that striving causes suffering and here (ironically) is where the metal represents just that, by symbolising the restrictions and limitations of the real world - or that the real world places upon us, in testing us to reach our specific goals. Metal therefore represents our basic abilities and attributes but also a hardness of feeling or emotional rigidity in expressing them.

Do you know what kind of metal the ball is made of?

Different metals indicate the different directions in which the best rpogress can be made.

Overall, this big metal ball would seem to be asking you to stop struggling against what is unavoidable and real. In dreams, we have the ability to look at things n much finer detail than we would necessarily in the body-bound waking state. But, you have a body now and are a part of the mundane world again, with all its traps of suffering that steal our joy... love, hate, desire, lonliness, lust, yearning, sorrow...etc

This ball seems to be trying to say stop running away from yourself to chase butterflies, stand still in resignation and watch the butterflies come to you. Give life a chance to throw you a ball or two to help the playful to emerge in order to be the beauty, the poet needs to write about.

Fears are born in the shadows in our souls, and shadows arise from previous negative behaviour, that is all, nothing too scary.

I would suggest that you stand still next time and let the metalball drop - see whre it takes you?

Thanks for sharing your dream with us.

Hey Lilla,

Wow... I think I need to give this a second read. I sort of know what you mean about the metal and the restrictions.

I can't tell you what the ball is made of - but when the dream/nightmare thing happens again I'll be sure to tell you.

Time for me to break the metal....

I am drawn to the water especially the baptismal qualities of water. I was entranced by how many available water features might be present in dreams. Great post!

Hahahah Mis,

Me too... when I sat down to this chapter of elements and weather, I remember thinking : Oh goodie, a nice short one ... *wry chuckle* that is until I started to dig through all my notes, files and text books ... the irony was not lost on me either, as I realised that the subject matter of interpretation here, was going to be every bit as deep and endless as the subject matter itself!

Yes, there are lots of watery places to dwell in dreams ... and it seems I have swum or travered them all ... although fog remains a bit of a mystery

Hugs to ya
