The Art Of Dreaming
October 30th 2006 21:17
Talking again with the native Yaqui Indian Don Juan, Castaneda establishes the premise that all life as we know it is energy. Great big balls of energy.
He then moves the premise on to a thing he calls a 'preditors awareness.' This he says is "... to perceive a world of solid objects that have either a positive or negative value and was absolutely necessary for our ancient ancestors survival." The premise moves on from here to the fact that "... after ages of perceiving in such a manner, we are now forced to believe that the world is made up of objects."
Don Juan's people believe whilst "perceiving in a predators way," is a very efficient way of ensuring food and safety, it is not the only way to perceive... There is a way of perceiving the essence of things, which will help us to understand, classify and describe the world in an entirely new, more exciting, more sophisticated terms...
The link...?
...that in our sleep we are unfettered by the need to perceive in the 'preditors way' and are therefore freed to see the essence.
Using powerful ancient techniques to alter his state of consciousness, Castaneda travels into new worlds where he encounters remarkable but dangerous beings. He cojoins energy bodies with another dreamer in order to dream and explore, and thuis acquaries new knowledge and understanding of our multi-layered world.
I am only about a third of the way through and highly recommend this book to 'advanced dreamers' interested in understanding more about lucid dreaming and all its possible explanations....
I believe Einstein was wrong when he said nothing travels faster than the speed of light because thought does!

I read this a few years ago now, but it startled me... and I love to be startled by books.
Great post, Lilla.
Have you tried some of his techniques? Have you encountered any of the 'scouts' yet? I think I have.

You're ahead of me on this one, but now I'm even keener to get to the end of this rivetting read. Yes, sometimes I have to re-read a paragraph here and there to 'get it,' it is a challenging read. The 'scouts' sound interesting as do the techniques... I look forward to the next level, heartily.
I may even see you there....
Thanks for the hint, I was finding it tough going with all this bloggin' hijacking my usual reading time.
...have a G&T on me...
Cheers

Science teacher: Everything requires energy.
Young Adrian: What about thought?
Science teacher: Depends what you mean by thought.
Old Adrian has reflected on the science teacher's words, and thinks that thought, also, takes time and energy... Put it this way. If you're thinking to yourself, there is neuron activity in your head (physical process requiring energy), and it certainly takes people average time to, say, understand a sentence. Or if one is talking about communication of thought, doesn't that also require energy (in writing or speaking), and time?
In what sense is it faster than the speed of light?

Therein lies the quandry ... one of measurement is it not? We know that both are real, however we measure one with our eyes and the other with... understanding, intuition, surrendipity, sound, telepathy, dream link-ups, astral projection, clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience...
We measure thought in many ways actually... architecture, science/theory, literature, technology everything we have measures thoughts in one genre or another....
What about the speed of smell...?
Can we say that because we don't have a piece of technology to measure something, it doesn't exist? Like light... thought must also have a point of origin, too...
My point is that we shouldn't rule out the possibility that at nighttime when there is little light it is the speed of thought that travels faster still....
Many people wake at 3am and 5am. Why these times? I have heard it said that we attend important meetings on other lvels and dimensions with people we may know or not know on this level, to discuss important work... interestingly enough what mystics call ... lightwork...
I don't have all the answers, just questions... ... just another quick thought....
You are right about the energy and the scientists have powered a small electric train that was hooked up to a mans mind, run purely on the neuron energy produced by the brain whilst thinking. When he was not thinking, the train ran slower and eventually stopped. When he was pondering it ran faster...
I'd love to know what happened to the speed of the train if his mind was boggling...?

It's amazing that we have a similar preoccupation. I was fascinated with Castaneda during 1980s - read all his books, from 'Don Juan's Teachings', 'Separate Reality', 'Eagle's Gift' and others. I used his 'shamanistic' theory of four types in my analysis of soap operas foursomes (Seinfield, Sex and City) and arts of dreaming ('tracking' is another one) or a 'dream control' in my Uni essay on"Waking Life' (read my blog about it) movie (have you watched it?). I also find a lot od similarities between Castaneda's anthropological studies and Jung (he was inspired by Indian, Mayan and similar mythologies when creating his theory of anima and animus and archetypes). I also share two things (beside similar experience with dreams) with both (Castaneda was born on Christmas day, like I) and Jung published his book on Collective unconscious' and archetypes in the year I was born.
