Running in our dreams always suggests speed and flow, a place where time and space are significant. Also important are where we are running too, or who (or what) we are running from, both representing the potential for anxiety and stress. In a spiritual sense, perhaps our preoccupation in trying to do something too quickly in our waking life?
The father of dream symbology Artemidorus Daldianus (or Ephesuis, c.120 AD), noted in his five volume dream book, Oneirocritica, that to be running in our dreams was to be conscious of the life force within ourselves. He also observed that dreams of running away suggest avoidance, either of emotions, fears or responsibilities, depending on the other symbols in the dream.
European Gypsy Folklore states that Running is a fortunate dream, with advantageous journeys and elevation in rank if you manage to evade your pursuer; a very bad omen if you are caught or fall, when they believe misfortune is donated and on the way.
There are many types of running from many sources and below is a cross section of variables that may add meaning to your analysis...
To Run and Be caught by Someone or Something Frightening ~ You must be very careful not to contract a virus or a sexually transmitted disease. Be aware that your immunity is low because of extra stresses at this time. get plenty rest and try some isolation to regain your energy levels. Eat well and drink plenty water.
To Run Away ~ A good chance that it is time to be more creative in dealing with that overbearing bully of a parent, boss, work collegue or playground thug? Check the other symbols in this dream for a clue as to the best way to go about dealing with it.
Meanwhile, be sure to tell people special to you how much you love them. There are people you know who need to hear this from you now, especially over the coming week. Do not allow this bullying overshadow your ability to let those important to you, know that you do care for them.
To Run Away and Not Get Caught by Someone or Something ~ You are definitely making all the correct moves and motivating yourself to achieve victory over a certain situation. A connection you have wanted to make with a certain type and kind of person, but have been unable to establish in the past, will now be successful. Any place you have in mind as a getaway destination should now be sought for a much needed mini break, one which will leave you with many fond memories and a chance to recharge after the battle is over.
Things that have felt impossible up until now, will now seem more possible, this dream assures you, that you are headed for a bright future.
You may want to see this person or accidentally run into them again in your waking life, or you will be made aware that this person wants to contact you. There may be a strong reason that you and this person should connect again at this time, so remain open to the idea.
Reunions with all sorts of people seem to be the main theme of this dream symbol and such reunions will bring you great joy over the coming weeks. You are asked to stay aware of all opportunities which present themselves during these meetings and to take active steps to avoid any negative situations seen in your dream, ahead of time.
To Run from Someone Attempting to Run You Over With Anything ... and Escape ~ A certain individual will go to great lengths to create a relationship between you and another person. It is your destiny to enjoy a beautiful, full blown love relationship that will blossom within a few days and bring joy into your life. This dream is announcing that this is the perfect timing to emotionally connect with another person. This person will respond in exactly the manner you desire and you will share many moments of intense personal interest. Expression is easy in this sysle, and you will be able to focus yourself in a detailed manner. As a result of this dream, you will be able to Achieve a great deal and enjoy many successes in your life.
This dream also augurs that you will find that you suddenly possess the strength and courage you need to handle each issue in your life and be able to enjoy peace and tranquillity. To Run After Something and Manage to Catch Up ~ It is time to demonstrate the best behaviour needed to bring someone closer to you. At first, this person will not seem interested, but you will find that your first impression was false.
This dream also announces that you will have an abundance of health and a small financial windfall may be on the way to you. You are headed for a prosperous future.
To See Someone You Do Not Recognise Run Away From You ~ You are entering a fantastic one week period when each plan, goal, idea and project that needs to be opened up; elaborated on and viewed on a grander scale. I used to always dream I was running away from someone when I was a child. Then someone told me that running away from someone means there is a domineering, controlling figure in your life that you want to be free of, and I realised it was my dad who was quite controlling and whom I was a little scared of when I was a kid. I also realised that the running away dreams stopped when my relationship with my dad changed for the better.

That is the truth ... and really interesting. I am left wondering what you were running from each time (if you can remember?); suffice to say that overbearing parents and bosses, often appear as monsters, murderers, or things like lava flows etc... things we have no, or little, control over.

If it were in my dream I would look at the ; To Run Away and Not Get Caught by Someone or Something ~ Category ... unless they do catch you? In which case you would need to add the In Any Other Form Category, as well as the simple version of To Run Away.
Of Course we need to add Mother and Sister into the mix to get stronger clues and any other prelevant symbols.
Mother : Is a huge Category all of its own, but in essense it is saying for you to pay attention to any actual conversations you have had with her in your waking life. I will feature Mother, Father and siblings, in coming few posts, okay? (just for you)...
Sister: suggests you pay close attention to the condition she is in as there is a negative around this element in this sense when added to running away, but i will clarify in the post on Sister okay... I know you have special circumstances around yours, and will look for the associated categories there too...
The main clues as to what you need/want to do about it are in the colours, atmospheres, objects and ambient surroundings; try to make a strong note of what they are next time ... and we'll see if we cant get some clearer picture over time, here.

This is another great post that will come in handy for me. I seem to do a lot of running in my dreams.
One dream that springs to mind involved me running down flights and flights of stone steps away from people I didn't know that well from my past and I hadn't seen them in ages. I was supposed to be in a building but for some reason, I was always running beneath an open sky. The steps ended a storey from the ground and I had to scale the walls to get away. The sky was beginning to darken by the time I left the building and when I looked back for signs of pursuit, the building was only 2 storeys!
My pursuers never caught up to me... I wasn't sure why I was running from them in the first place either.
I'm still not exactly sure what to make of this dream, but from the To Run Away and Not Get Caught by Someone or Something Catergory, it sounds encouraging

I am not a chronic dreamer (in sleep time anyway) but when I seem to dream the most it is usually around times of stress.
I'll have to study Dream Herald to see what I can find!

A lot of the dream definitions were different to what I assumed they'd mean - that just goes to show my lack of knowledge in the field of dream interpretation. Like the "To Run from Someone Attempting to Run You Over With Anything ... and Escape.." I never would've predicted it meant the potential beginning of a good relationship.
I'm pretty sure I've had dreams that have involved running before; I've really got to start writing them down.

Descending steps is interesting and you will find a little of the psychological meaning in the *Components in Buildings* posts under stairs.
Otherwise in a more literal sense, to be running down steps can often mean that you should be careful not to put yourself in a position that will later lead to an investigation and interrogation. Stay clear of all activities that could lead you there for a few days following this dream.
Walls in dreams depend largely on their type, i.e. cement, wooden, brick etc and I will do a post on walls in the future, to cover the differences ~ although I think there is a little on walls in the Compnenets of Buildings posts too?
