Keeping a Dream Journal

March 2nd 2007 01:05

It dawned on me whilst I was writing 'Body Parts' (the next post), that I had never really outlined how you go about keeping a dream journal... mon dui ...So, for those of you who do not yet already have one, here's how it works...

You basically keep a dream diary of your nightly dreams, noting all the little things you notice..

For example, if you dream of kissing someone, and then notice the partners nose and the number 8 appears, whilst a priest is blessing a couple who are practicing S & M [over in the corner of the roof], of a large house - with big windows - through which there is a huge lion by a fireplace ... then you will need to flick through all the posts on this blog and jot down all the symbol meanings.

Be aware that the most subtle images in your dream will probably yield you the most reward in translation.

You would note the above dream as follows;

No Fear - were you (as a couple) alone?
Feelings - arousal, love, sensuality, sexual?
Nightime - no rain, were there clouds?
Starry sky - was there a moon?
Kissing -Known partner or unknown partner?
Clothes - could you recall what you or your partner were wearing?
Nose - who's nose, what did it look like?
Number 8 - was it brass numbers, or in a colour on paper? How did you see it?
Priest -wearing what colour robe? Did you hear any of his words?
S&M - What colour outfits, what type of sex - exactly?
Roof of building - what colour, hot or cold, wet or dry?
Large building - Try to visulaise the colour and style of the building?
Windows - large, small, clear glass or coloured?
Lion - male or female?
Hearth (or fireplace) - what kind, modern or old. Was there a mantlepiece, if so, what was on it, if anything...

Remember, it is the subtle details that will reveal so much more than just the plain facts. Be thorough and try to recall everything...

You will need a good dream dictionary, or simply flick through the posts of this blog, for A-Z lists of various aspects of a dream...

Of course if it all gets too much, then just 'comment' me your dream, on the relevant post ... and I'll do my best to interpret it... but try yourself, because the rewards when you look back over the months of dreams... are... well, awesome, liberating, empowering....

Happy Dreaming...

Wonderful advice, Lilla. I've been putting off a dream journal for way too long now. I'm contemplating adding one as a category to Paranormally Speaking. I think I may be more disciplined with maintaining a dream journal if I do it online. That's how I use to keep them.

I've been having some doozies lately... Alec Baldwin was taking me to dinner at a fancy restaraunt. We had a great chat in the car about his career, and then at the restaraunt, were told to sit at table #2. We arrived at the table to find that everyone else in the restaraunt had also been assigned to table #2. When we brought it to the attention of the host, he yelled at us and told us to leave. I'm not even too worked up over translating that one... I'm just excited I got to go out with Alec Baldwin. *LMAO*

I want Wendis dream! I want dinner with Alec Baldwin!!
I used to keep a dream journal and interpret dreams out of my 'dream manual' but I have barely enough time for my regular journal! Im usually at the stables before symbols become apparent! Sigh. I guess I should try harder?

I went and bought a journal the other day just for this Lilla....it is actually becoming a little easier to understand the dreams when you acknowledge that you are listening to them...I am hoping that as time goes on I will be able to spend more time looking around and paying attention to the little things, as you have said here....thanks to your posts they are becoming a little easier to interpret....

Hi Wendi,

Wow : Alec B was my favourite Baldwin, before he became all bloated… was he bloated in your dream?

Fancy Restaurant eh? You know what that means, don’t you...?

Well it suggests a need for company, male company.

Is someone stirring you up, my dear?

Interestingly though, unlike a sexual dream of kissing to indicate a need, or want… to get to know someone better; a Restaurant in dreams symbolises that we are not only becoming fearful of being alone, but equally afraid of allowing someone to delve too far into our private space...

Generally speaking, any place to do with food in a dream is telling us that we need emotional substance… Spiritually, it symbolises our need to belong to a group of people who all have the same habits and perhaps a diversity of beliefs?

Refer to previous Numbers In Dreams post for meanings for No: 2

Hope you get a second date? *Chuckle*

Lilla …

PS, you don't remember what was on the menu, do you? Individual Food items are important too... *sigh* there's another post after body parts, perhaps? When will I have time for Tarot Cards too?

Kleo,

Just a few words is sufficient to recapture most details… for example, last night, I crashed a bi-plane into a house, in a really spectacular way *scary* … blacked out and everything… no one killed thank God... anyway, my point is that by writing Plane Crash down, when I come back to it ... I’ll probably be able to recall all the little details; like it was a red plane (like in the Phantom Movie), there was a family living in the house and the female was very pregnant (like Hermione in the Epic Movie *lol*)… that sort of thing…

Even just a plane crash is worth writing down.

I always have a pen on my ear and jot things as they come to me everywhere. Perhaps if you had a pen and paper in the stables, you could jot things as they pop into your mind during the work? Just a suggestion…

I will interpret your other dream this afternoon, hopefully…

thanks for being patient
Lilla …

Thanks Ash,

..it is my pleasure, as I know how much reward comes from following this avenue. Power to you for making the effort.

Yes, they will get easier and I am thrilled that I can add extra insight with my posts... I'll keep them coming... body parts to follow soon, all things being equal...*lol*

Happy deciphering my friend.
