Dream Clothing : Part 2 – Articles of Clothing.
March 3rd 2008 07:11
Buttons ~ are about wishing to do things right automatically, not just by ourselves, but within the greater community and ultimately, within the spiritual realms beyond, where our choices will leave the legacy we will ultimately answer to.
Female Sewing Bright Buttons on A Uniform – is a very auspicious dream of right and chaste behaviour leading to a warm, good looking and affectionate partner, and a marriage filled with abundance.
Male Sewing Bright Buttons on A Uniform – according to South Eastern European folklore, this symbol suggests possible interest and acceptance to military school, with honours and a bright career.
See Uniform below, for more details.
Dull Coloured Cloth Buttons – are said to be symbols of major disappointments, leading sometimes to loss and a long period of ill health, allowing enough time necessary to recover and start again.
Loosing a Button – is said to foretell losses in trade for those self employed, perhaps even a delay or cancellation of a contract. (French folklore).
Belt ~ if this piece of clothing attracts your attention, you are trying to alert yourself to the fact that you may be bound by outmoded attitudes. There is the feeling here too that duty may be tying us to a mundane existence for the time being., ultimately then, Ultimately though a belt is a symbol that categorically states that your power will eventually be returned to you, in kind…hang in there.
An Ornate Belt – can suggest eventual status through power of office within a work related hierarchy, through hard work and effort.
Buckles ~ represent protective forces and support against evil in the form of temptation to abandon our responsibilities.
An Ornate Buckle – is alerting you to the fact that you may need to prepare for a busy social life. As you climb the ladder of success to positions of power, invitations will begin to pour in from every quarter.
Fastening a Buckle – if completely, shows that you have mastered the ability to accept responsibility for your choices. Well done.
Boots ~ like Shoes are a symbol of good luck, especially if they are new.
Cloak ~ According to the Gypsy’s this piece of apparel tells of a concealment of poverty. However, more traditionally, it is a sign of some protection in whatever area is signified by the colour of the shawl and its thickness/substance.
A Woollen Cloak – is a sign of pending prosperity, despite present obstacles.
Coat ~ You are being protected by love. Note the colour of the coat to reveal possible hints on the area of vulnerability, or strengths, which can be used to protect yourself.
An Animal-pelt Coat (as in Sheepskin, or Bear fur, etc.) – Click <<here>> Really Long Link for the link to the first of my series of ‘Animals in Dreams’ posts, to find the relevant animal and it’s meaning.
Then know that it is that area of your ‘faith’ that is being protected, or needs strengthening.
Fear of Losing a Coat – your faith and beliefs are being strengthened through a solid testing by fire. Stand firm and do not give way to fear.
A Threadbare Coat, or one that is Too Short – signifies that you doubt that you have enough love to see you through to the conclusion of this testing time. Hang in there, all will be well because the appearance of the coat itself, augurs eventual success - although unsuccessful business for a while – may hamper your efforts to move forwards on some matter.
No matter how thin or small, a threadbare coat still offers you the protection you need to get you through life’s storms in personal matters. (Check the ‘Colour’ link below for added details of vulnerable areas.)
COLOURS of Clothing - are ALWAYS very important and of immense relevance and should always be noted along with the object in question – this is particularly so, where clothing is concerned.
Click << here >> : to my updated colours page to find the COLOUR you need to interpret your dream further.
Feathers ~ A symbol to lighten the message of the apparel it is attached to, and advise of success if listened to. Feathers simply advise that a more gentle approach is needed here with wisdom attained from flights to other parts of the self. There is a need to calmly ascertain the real facts within the situation, it is not a time to be hot headed about things.
To the Egyptians feathers were a symbol of power, but not through might, but the more gentle attributes of truth, goodness and knowledge. Wisely used now, and the feathers of your dreams are guaranteeing success as you complete the tasks at hand.
Dark Coloured Feathers - Suggest a failure to observe the signs that will lead to setbacks in the form of censure.
Gauzy Black Costumes ~ portend chastening sorrow through great disappointment.
Gloves ~ you may need to first acquaint yourself with the deeper meaning of ‘Hands’ << here >>
When hands are gloved, you have the ability to be careful in your dealings with others, handling them and situations with delicacy, caution and economy. You are not a mercenary nor have to worry about becoming so in order to rightly, ‘challenge the status quo,’ in defending any charges laid at your door.
The Gypsy’s believe that to see gloved hands in a dream, denotes that you will have law suits, or business troubles, which you will be able to settle satisfactorily on your own.
Old Torn, or Worn Gloves – suggest that someone may betray you and you will suffer loss as a result.
To Loose Gloves – suggests that you will be completely abandoned, and will have to earn your own way forward in isolation, until a future day, when things will unexpectedly turn around.
Finding a Pair of Gloves – is very lucky in matters of the heart, and according to the Gypsy’s augurs a wedding, or new relationship.
To see yourself Removing Your Glove – is said to be a sad sign that you want to keep things apart, to the point of self-defeat in business and/or love. It is time to re-evaluate your motives, modus operandi and open your heart to love a little more.
For a Man to Fasten a Ladies Glove – is a sign that he has, or will have, a mistress on his hands, who threatens his public exposure. (Old Victorian Folklore).
Hat ~ If seen on the head, it represents wisdom and intellect… and protection. As a symbol, hats can be strangely connected to sexuality in some peculiar cerebral way… perhaps in how we think about sexuality itself; our views on promiscuity vs love, and how those judgements impact in our daily popularity. All this things may be called into focus when a hat appears in your dream.
To Loose Your Hat – foretells that important people in your life will break, or not even try to keep, planned appointments or engagements with you. You must look closely at your actions and how you might be projecting the thought that you are not important enough.
For A Man To Wear A New Hat – is said to be a symbol of a new job, or increased business if self employed. Hard work is about to pay off.
For A Woman To Wear a Fine New Hat – according to French folklore, denotes that she will attain wealth and much admiration, and many congenial suitors.
If The Wind Blows Your Hat Off – in your dreamscape, beware the ‘wheel of fortune’ starting another downward cycle in your daily life. It would be a good time for you to cultivate a detached state of mind, and remember that nothing is permanent. Fortune rises and falls all the time in order to teach us valuable lessons; look to the blessings and turning points in all your misfortunes ... ride them out with a prayer, as if a bad storm.
Jumpsuit ~ Someone, or something is making you feel cloistered and unsettled. It denotes a restless time ahead, when it will seem impossible to concentrate. If this dream comes as a result of studies, or applied pressure at work, try to implement some physical activities - like swimming every day to help you stay tuned in - until this time passes. Avoiding stimulants like coffee may also prove useful after this dream.
(Note the colour of the jumpsuit for added information).
Leather ~ At its most basic, leather is said to be the purest representation of our self image. The interesting thing about it is, that dreams where leather is thrown up as a clear image, are done so as a result of very careful consideration and generally auspicious.
Dark Coloured Leather – can be pointing to considerations of overcoming (or dealing with) leanings towards sadistic methods and points to the aspects of how we are currently viewing our sexuality in that light. (see below for meanings of Wings).
To Be Dressed in Leather – according to Gypsy folklore is a symbol of success and the accumulation of wealth as well as luck.
For A Man To Be In Leather - is also said to portend favourable engagements with women.
To Be in Bike Leathers – augurs complete protection in all areas of waking life.
To See Piles of Leather – fortune and happiness assured.
Nightgown ~ suggests openness and foretells of an honourable career through efforts in honesty. According to folklore, if you should tear your nightgown, then you must re-think a recent hasty action.
Parasol ~ A warning dream of disturbing flirtations, indiscretion and possible infidelity. Note the colour of the parasol and the area that may need addressing within a relationship.
If Married - according to gypsy folklore, this is not a good dream as it denotes illicit pleasures.
A Woman with a Parasol - she will engage in many flirtations in waking life, some of which will cause her a great problem with her partner if she is not more sagacious.
Pyjamas ~ are symbols that you need to take some time out for rest and relaxation, especially if you are in bed at the time (a place of safety). You must find somewhere safe to go in your waking life. Book a trip somewhere and take off for a few days R & R, perhaps visit a trusted grandparent or friend.
Raincoat/Macintosh ~ One modern interpretation for this symbol talks about the need for protection, but this time from someone else’s emotional onslaught. You must find ways of ‘not being there’ if someone is hounding you before you are ready to listen to them. You must develop the courage to CLEARLY mark a strong emotional boundary line, if someone is trespassing.
Sackcloth ~ Of course in it’s Biblical sense, this is a sign of humility. People dressed in sackcloth as a means to show that they were less than dust – hence the saying, ‘It was worse than wearing sackcloth and ashes.’ It was also worn to give a public show of spiritual poverty, for example, in times of mourning.
Today, a dream of being dressed in sackcloth is saying that you are feeling humiliation (or will do), through incorrect action. As such, it is also a symbol for an outward show of repentance, much needed now in order for you to forgive yourself … as well as others forgiving you … which they will do.
Remember : some need more time than others to forgive completely.
Satin ~ a dream much like silk, but more predominently focused on the aspect of spiritual ‘joy’ itself, perhaps from simple pleasures, rather than the ‘having of happiness’ through material posessions, although this does not rule out the fact that an acquisition of something much sought after, can cause great joy.
Seamstress ~ to see one sewing new clothes for you, signifies unexpected luck headed your way! (Also see Tailor).
Shirt ~ Time to take appropriate action - often in times of grief - but even so, can be taken as a positive sign of success.
A Torn Shirt - often augurs a time to cultivate patience, least you attract slander, which may still be upon you anyway ... in which case, you will need patience in dealing with the perpetrator(s).
To Tear Your Shirt Yourself – in itself is a sign of indiscretion and recklessness and you must check your behaviour.
Shoes ~ Are about staying grounded and your ability to ‘stay in touch’ with everyday life.
Familiar Shoes - (yours or others) is an odd symbol, denoting something is off about the way you have been thinking about life lately. It is time to make an adjustment towards your attitude to life, least you walk into dire straits.
Lacing Up Shoes – Is a long held symbol, dating back to dream alanysist, Robert Cross Smith (1700s), as a sign of death.
According to the Gypsy’s to be wearing a brand new pair of shoes, denotes many journeys. (the colour here can indicate in which direction).
Silk ~ to be dressed in silk depicts honour, luxurious living and riches all coming your way.
To Trade in Silk (clothes) – is a traditionally proven sign of coming profit.
Tailor ~ As with the Seamstress above, any professional person appearing in our dreams bears special consideration as to their trade, their role will have significance on how we see our ‘talents.’ In this case the ability to ‘fashion’ something new which also protects, alerts us to these qualities within ourselves. It represents our creative ability in protecting ourselves.
The Gypsy’s see the need for creative problem solving here too, and consider this dream to mean that worries are about to arise over a journey which needs to be made. They say whichever way it is planned (or goes), there will be quarrels and a situation where both sides cannot be pleased.
Try to see which item of clothing (and colour) the tailor is sewing for further clues here.
Tie ~ Often a sign of you being on the right path through decisions of using good behaviour. For Freud (as with anything not bowl shaped), the tie signified a phallus.
Tassel(s) ~ The Gypsy’s will tell you that this is a dream of coming delights. However, more traditional interpretations will include it as an auspicious symbol for success and achievement.
If multiple tassels, take note of the number and click << here >> to NUMBERS in Dreams.
Tattoo ~ On the physical level it is possible that something dangerous from the past is haunting you. Another aspect is that your individuality is very important to you and should be guarded in your waking life.
A tattoo is a deeper way of belonging to a special tribe or cult, than a badge?
Gypsy folklore states that if they appear on your body in your dreams you will be called away from your home for a long period of time.
Tattoo’s on Others – Strange surreal love will soon make you an object of much envy and jealousy.
To Be The Tattooist – is a great symbol if you love adventure, for it tells of you abandoning your friends and family, to follow a fancy for a strange land (metaphorically speaking),and some strange experiences.

To Put Trousers On Inside Out – a fascination is fastening its hold on you.
Underwear ~ Whether your own, or others, suggests you are considering your attitudes towards self-image through your sexuality and deeper desires.
Click << here >> to Body Parts for more details.
Uniforms ~ are about our relationship to the authority of group consciousness. However rebellious we may be, a part of us needs to conform in order to belong. A uniform in this light is something which has to be earned, and wearing it in a dream is often a sign of that ‘graduation.’
To Be In A Group Wearing a Uniform – means just that, you have reached the point of having done enough ‘inner work’ to reach the point of being recognised within your peer group, or even by those above your level. Congratulations!
A Uniform On A Woman – signifies the ability (through effort) to be a little more on the assertive (masculine) side of her nature; still necessary in breaking through some of the social mores of the day, in certain areas.
To the Gypsy’s this symbol is compounded as one of glory, valour and celebrity.
To Take Off a Uniform – can indicate that you have chosen a monastic life, or that of a hermit …. If not already, it is a dream which can signal the desire for complete retreat. Check out your local Ashram, Buddhist monastery or Church Chapter, many offer mini-retreats at reasonable rates, as well as the ability to attend some worship if required.
To Violently Reject or Defile a Uniform – You may need to seek a professional counsellor to help you deal with anti-social behaviour caused through inferiority; which is stopping you from taking your rightful place in the pageant of life, for which your creative genius is always welcome.
Veils ~ Truths are being hidden in our waking lives. If part of us is living in denial this dream is asking you to lift the veil – take the blindfold off - and take a really long look at what it is you are hiding from yourself.
Is someone trying to hide something from you?
Is it necessary to hide something at this time to protect your modesty, or is it long past and time to reveal a long held secret?
To many cultures, even today, the veil remains a symbol of the submission of woman to man.
Velvet ~ Click << here >>
Wedding Clothing – signifies new friends. It heralds pleasing results from efforts around your work environment and very often is a forerunner to a meeting with someone where ‘two minds are as one.’

They can thus stand for new beginnings as well as endings.

It went on and on... I think this has been the longest to date, but also the most interesting as i could recall dreams from nearly every garment as I trugded through all my own notes as well.
Quite conclusive, when you add it to numbers and colours and next perhaps I'll look at grooming as the finaly part of 'getting dressed.'
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate your appreciation - perhaps we should start up a mutual admiration society.. ((laughs)) you're not a gemini are you, it usually ends like that between me and the twins.
I loved this one as I had such a vested interest in them all (not a pun), I have dreamt of about every piece of clothing here at various stages and it was like a trip down memory lane.
As always, I hope it proves helpful to you in all ways.

It`s interesting to note how the meanings of objects change with time... I wish that interpretations would be adjusted accordingly across the spectrum to keep up with the times!
Started to read 'The Alchemist' in the wee hours of this morning and came across an interesting passage -

I am not sure I follow in updating interpretations, do you mean dream objects?
I loved the Alchemist and have re-read it since. .. and that is true what Cohelo writes about the soul language, isn't it?
dreamy travel snoozes..

Like in this example, meanings have been updated over time. I have noted a few times in your posts how the interpretations have changed slightly with meanings not tbe taken so literally.. awakenings realised if you like.

So interesting that they have, I guess in this case we have a longer life expectancy these days ... In the case of this symbol, it is probably a good thing that it has changed.
It is interesting that you liken it to a group conscious awakening.
