Dream Clothing : Part 1 - How You Wear It?

February 29th 2008 10:09
Quite simply, clothing in dreams - like in waking life - represent the outer identity, or persona, which we project to the world; but in dreams they also show how we view our own self image from within - how we see ourselves.

To put new clothes on - or reject old ones – or simply to change styles, and/or colours, is all about our exploration of the new roles we are trying on for ourselves in our waking lives. They ocurr as a response to life, and spiritual growth, mirroring acurately our reaction to the family/group, community/spiritual family around us by our clothing choices..

New jobs, family situations, or new members of the family, as well as parting ones; new relationships and partners, or additions to our spiritual family/peer group or community - even our virtual one – all need adjustments which are sometimes made as quickly as changing our clothes. Our roles (self-image) change too, projected to us by our nightly costume changes and wardrobe malfunctions.

As we change attitudes and status, we try on new robes as a way of ‘trying on’ our new status/ self-image. In this way we allow old ideas and belief patterns to fall away and ‘change colour.’ We even swap Angel wings for Burka’s, just to see how it all ‘fits,’ as we work towards deeper meaning and understanding of ourselves, and who we really are.

As predictive symbols, folklore from across the world is rich in its meaning for this symbol. Generally though, as a Gypsy divinatory tool, clothes offer hints as to whether business and affairs of the heart, will be successful, or not…

Whole, clean clothes - good : Soiled and threadbare - not good.

Clothes also act as a protection from direct physical contact in waking life, mirrored in dreams as symbolic protection of the ‘self’ from violation. In this way, dream-clothing can also conceal, or reveal and by definition, it also covers our imperfections, and nudity … but in dreams, it is also very good at disguising our sexuality.

Clothes that noticeably reveal certain parts of our bodies in a dream, do so to highlight our vulnerabilities in that area. You will need to Click <<here>> if such an anatomical attribute is made clearly discernable to identify the body part in question and its relevance.

COLOURS of Clothing - are ALWAYS very important too and of immense relevance. You should always make an extra effort to snatch the particular colour of a piece of clothing away with you back to the waking world. With practice this becomes easier than it first appears.

HOW DO WE SEE and WEAR OUR DREAM CLOTHES :

Admiring Others Clothing – is a sign that you may need to take time out to reflect on your achievements. Put yourself in the picture by looking at your positive attributes and contributions to your peer group. Focus on your achievements rather than wasting your time contemplating jealous fears of your friends.

This symbol always brings to mind a passage from Desiderata for me, where the author, Max Ehrmann states quite simply and truthfully that, ‘ …if you compare yourself to others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.’

Changing Clothes Within the Dream – We are making a big effort to change our image and growing spiritually as a result. In our waking world there is usually a peer, a teacher and a lover/partner ... this dream usually appears in response to our achievement in making inroads to who we really are, as a result.

Noting the colours of the change here, as well as any styles (trousers to dress, White dress to Blue dress, etc) is crucial to correct interpretation.

You will need to visit the Colours In Dreams Link above.

Clothes That Belong to a Known Person – can serve to remind us of that person and our deep desire to share what we have learned, with them in waking life. If this is not possible through separation, then that is okay, you are just dealing with the pain of not being able to contact them.

Sometimes this dream can herald an unexpected reunion if the person is absent.

Clothes That Have Been Cut Too Short – suggest that you are outgrowing former pleasures and need to look to new, higher pastures for your entertainment fulfilment. If you have just gone clubbing to enjoy a dance and social intercourse, then short clothes are saying you need to head a bit ‘up market,’ here and there. Try ballroom dancing lessons perhaps, or attend a special masked ball. Time to step up to museums, art galleries and more unusual places of interest, instead of just the local haunts … perhaps trying new café’s or restaurants, more frequent visits to the theatre, instead of just the movies, or weekly DVD hire and a quick meal at a franchise outlet.

Clothes Worn by Someone Who Doesn't Own Them – You are being alerted to your possible confusion over the roles that each character in your group is playing, or meant to play – especially in relation to where you sit into the “ group play.”

Perhaps you are not feeling authentic in your role as it is now? Look to where you may have allowed opinions to make you something you are not, by avoiding confrontations.

Try to see your group as a small collective of people who have probably lived together in a past life, and are helping each other work through their ‘roles,’ perhaps bringing you to this very realisation.

Getting Dressed In Time To Catch a Train – Be prepared for the foibles of others to cause you much annoyance over the coming weeks. It is a warning dream in a way, signalling that you would be better relying on your own efforts as far as possible at this time, if you are to catch your contentment and success.

Time to add intellect to emotion and work on your spiritual discipline, some things can be achieved in solitude sometimes and this dream is confirming that now is a good time … others truly will be useless in advancing your growth at this time.

Getting Undressed – usually a sign that your hard work is paying off and you are shedding old beliefs and unnecessary self-consciousness on the way to who you really are. Getting in touch with your true desires.

Having Trouble Dressing – indicates that an evil person is (or will) detain you and give you worries, holding you back from your places of enjoyment, be they physical places or spiritual ones. Invading places where you usually go to relax and enjoy being in your own company – like a bath, or time for writing, shopping, reading etc.,

If A Woman is Displeased with Her Clothing – Gypsy folklore says that she will have to contend with jealousy in her search for social distinction, but when she gets there, she may well become a strong role model and/or ‘trend setter.’

Inappropriately Dressed – The problems you are having in ‘fitting in’ can be clarified by the other symbols around this particular ‘scene.’ They will denote whether the difficulty is through your resistance to the group (over dressed), or visa versa (under dressed).

Losing Clothes and Being Naked – spotlight on your greatest vulnerability and fears. Note the rest of the dream for relevant symbols to highlight the area of where protection is needed. Particularly if a body part comes into focus.

Mis-fitting Clothes – signify that you look towards straightening out confusions in your affections, before you make a mistake in some important endeavour. Visit a Clairvoyant or Tarot reader, priest, or favourite Grand parent, to get clarification and validation of your feelings.

If they are not available, start some basic meditation to allow your mind to idle in order for solutions to present themselves. You can try this crystal therapy for confusion to see if it helps.

For Confusion and/or over excited states of mind …

Hold a piece of Angelite in your hand for five minutes.

Follow this by holding a piece of clear quartz for another five minutes.

After that, hold a piece of something gently energizing, like Carnelian or Red Jasper for another five minutes.

Repeat three times a day, until clarity is gained.

Pretty Delicate Clothes – appear when we need to stop and smell the roses, and give thanks for all the wonderful diverse pleasures and people we have in our lives. If this type of clothing is highlighted you are being nudged to be a little more grateful in your waking life. Perhaps start a gratitude journal, write down and give thanks for five things you are grateful for, each night before bed, or upon rising.

To See the Elderly in Traditional (or Victorian clothing), or Young People in very Trendy Young Clothes – according to Artemidorus Daldianus (120AD), the compiler of a five-volume dream book, which forms the basis of mystical dream interpretation to this day; this dream means that you will have to undertake some engagement that is abhorrent to you. It will give you many restless nights. You are advised to try to look at it as a test, because that is what these kind of experiences always are. Success in dealing with it will well, with dignity intact, will be well rewarded.

Hi Mis ...(desperately commenting from the halls of anonyminity as I cannot log in to make a comment through my member status ???)

THenks for the compliment and encouragement. There is much in this genre of dreams, isn't there?

Will post part II soon.

Hope your renovations are coming along well, will visit you soon...

Tracy, (again from anony-hyper-space), you are very welcome and I hope you find the information really useful!

It is a fascinating genre of dream interpretations as it has so much to do with the way we view ourselves (to ourselves) and then how we project that to the outside world.

Happy analysis.
