Cars In Dreams - What Do They Mean?

June 26th 2007 08:37
Driving a car across your dreamscape is perhaps, one of the commonest of dream-codes that we share as a species (along with trains, boats, buildings and aeroplanes)…

So what’s it all about?

Well, at the very basic level, a dream which sees you squarely placed inside the vehicle (probably driving yourself) is a clear reflection of how you are feeling about your personal space. You. Your ego… your personally power …vroom!

Being in a car in your dreams is the symbolic extension of yourself, so it’s always a personal dream, often with very clear details and activities; highly symbolic people and scenery to go with it.

This dream is reflecting the way you move forward in your life....the context within which you grow personally and learn your life lessons.

It reflects your personal integrity and the ‘sum of all your parts' (knowledge, intentions, abilities).

Note : So much can be gleaned from these dreams, if you keep a dream journal and take notes… then look up their definitions. Take special notice of the scenery and the type of car you are driving.

So, actually Being in the Car – alerts you to it being the time to take a look at your own motivation. A time to stocktake how you are travelling in life.

To be the Driver of the Car – steering the car - augurs all is well, you are on your way to achieving your goal and if the trip is smooth, confidently at the ‘helm,’ so to speak.

The journey and it's symbols will help you glean more information, but it's primarily about how you are “running your life” right now… about how you are taking your responsibilities to ‘guide your life forward.’

Being a Passenger in the Car – is bad news, because it means you have given your responsibility (and therefore your power) to others to lead the way for you.

To dream of a Stolen Car – represents a feeling that someone or something is trying to compromise your integrity, to take advantage of you, or to take something that belongs to you. Usually in a sneaky, dishonest, or manipulative way.

Dream Scenarios

…involving you in a vehicle, are more often to do with the emotional and psychological state you are in... and the level of maturity you have achieved in dealing with the dream journey you take in your dream car.

Being Alone – in the car, often indicates independence and a preference to being so, preferring your own company above others. Certainly a sign that you value your freedom and solitude.

A Car Accident – represents your fear of something catastrophic happening if you loose control of the situation. It reflects a direct fear of failure. Examples can include; running off a bridge, or road into a river, or water of some kind. This would suggest that you are afraid to let go of emotional control (water), in case those emotions swamp you... perhaps they have before?

To be in an Accident and be Injured, or Killed – although very often disturbing (often waking you) this is a fairly common dream and you must pay particular attention to all the small details within this dream for a meaningful analysis.

Generally - Accidents indicate a warning to be careful, or aware of hidden aggression, either within yourself self or from others.

A Car on Fire – denotes impending stress of some sort, either emotionally or physically.

Being Overtaken – relates to a feeling of being left behind your peers, or family in some way.

Reversing a Car – means that you are allowing yourself to go backwards in your development.

Old Rusty Cars – indicate that you are not taking care of your body right now and probably need to work on your diet and exercise programme. This can also signify the erosion of ethical morals due to a bad environment, or crowd.

Spare Parts

The Car Engine – indicates our essential drives which we have to deal with; thing like libido, passion, hate, anger, jealousy, happiness, joy, emotional insecurity.all components of the 'engine' of the car we’re driving.

Brakes on the Vehicle – indicates your own ability to control the situation you are currently in. If they are not working, your moral integrity may need an overhaul.

The Accelerator Pedal – indicates the rate at which you are able to move forward in your life.

If it is stuck, or not working - you may need to budge it. It may be time to take a risk and make that unexpected move, to get you back on track to achieving your goal.

If it is stuck ‘down’ and you cannot pull it back - and are going to fast? …then you already know, you having trouble slowing down in some aspect of your life. It is time to address that situation now!

Steering Wheel - To dream about a steering wheel means that decisions and your direction in life are on your mind right now.

Carrying out Repairs on your Dream Car?

You may need a tune up about the way you are thinking about your life and what you are trying to achieve in it. If you have been wondering about new studies, this is a sign that it is a good time now to go ahead.

Sometimes we must exchange old outmoded ideas, habits and belief patterns for new – more effective – ways of being. Be open to new ideas right now.

Hi Lilla

my dream journal page has been left empty for this one! When I read previously that you were doing a post on dreams involving cars I left it alone.... until now.

I felt this dream was rather important and now realise why... very symbolic. Thanks for the info.......... as always! Very helpful

Very interesting, Lilla. As I've indicated before, I'm not entirely sold on dream interpretation, but a couple points you've made here struck a chord with me. I dream about driving. A Lot. Most of the time I am driving the car myself, but as with any other dream theme, that varies from time to time. Your notes about what it means to drive alone come close to the mark. I do value my independence, and I do value quiet time to myself.

I dream about driving on some crazy, surreal roads, too. Not sure what significance that has, if any.....

HI Ash,

...you bet, I loved this film too ..so many good morals, so many good values... and fun having them, what I always like.

I'm really pleased that you found this useful. Dreams of cars are such an important symbol to undrstand.

I was driving again last night myself. This time a helicopter! *lol* that's a newbie for me, it's usually a hot air balloon or just my own 'wings' ... I don't have much on helicopters?

Crashes of course are about feeling out of control, or a feeling that you're having bad luck or things just aren't going your way right now... that sort of makes sense on a few levels.

Helicopters are interesting, even though this one crash landed ...*lol* must work on my piloting skills...explore the symbology of helicopters a bit more.*chuckle*

Hope it all starts to make more sense to you too...

much warmth

Winston,

Hmmm, perhaps I shuld have mentioned roads as part of this collection?

It is a good and valid point...and whilst the type of road can be as varied as piebald horses, it's the journey in dreams that are the potent images.

Every step that we take in life to understanding ourselves and the world we live in can be pictured in terms of a journey, and the dreams we have of that journey, reflect that movement.

Each moment is totally unique, and a road is a part of that unique symbology.

As a means of traversing the moments of uniqueness a road in a dream represents a way to get from one place to another - either literally or symbolically (as in a course of action leading to certain results).

A road in a dream can also represent your life path or life journey, or a portion of it - past, present, and/or future.

To be stranded on this road means you may feel stuck or lacking support somehow in your real life.

To dream you are driving down a road and accidentally run off the road means you need to pay more attention to responsibility for yourself and your life somehow.

To dream you're on a road and you get hit or injured means you're feeling vulnerable or unlucky in life, or are afraid of such things happening.

As with all travel, journey, transport dreams you must pay very close attention to the detail around each dream "journey." They will hold the real clues as to what you are sorting through, learning, integrating, creating...

Happy Dreams!

Very useful indeed. My Jung dreamwork is limited as Jung was not "car savvy!" Thanks for adding to my knowledge! Can't wait for the next one!

Just a question regarding cars Lilla

what if you see your car has been broken into? In particular the door handle being stolen (I would assume that has to do with problems getting into your vehicle, so to speak) and the back windscreen shattered (to do with looking behind or maybe looking in the past perhaps?)

thank you - I`m in full decipher mode today, your posts, yet again, are coming in very handy!

Ash,

you've got the point now and are right on track here...

...if the car is broken into, it means that someonw is syphoning your energy. You must investigate psychic protection visualisation techniques. Someone keeps thwarting your plans and hopes... is anything stolen that you can see?

THe back windscreen being broken indicates that certain past events are still causing inconvenience...and may need attention, some ritual clearing, creating a sacred space for yourself in the waking world. A place ot go and purge past trauma?

The handle is quirky and funny... it's the entry point and someone keeps forcing the lock...pushing your buttons? Making you trip... not a very nice act.

All minor gliches, which are good little reminders to make sure you create boundaries for yourself, which you do not let others cross...also, when you are the one giving, make sure that you do not cross the boundaries to resentment by giving too much. These little minor repairs should then dissapear.

Cheeriooo

Thanks Lilla - that makes perfect sense.

I have an idea who is sapping that energy.

Someone keeps thwarting your plans and hopes... is anything stolen that you can see?

not anything material.... but yes!

You must investigate psychic protection visualisation techniques
There is a great little shop at the Plaza (Maroochydore) where I went to find the Doreen Virtue CD on Chakra Clearing which you recommended. What a haven! I had always walked past it because of preconceived notions of such things being 'evil' and 'dark, black magic' .

I am so glad you recommended it because I rang the shop to enquire as to whether they had the CD or not.... I got there and the woman had wrapped it up and gave me a free crystal, taking the time to explain its meaning and what to do with it. I had a good browse around and they have such wonderful reading material which I am slowly getting through. I`m going searching again now!

Love these posts!

Ok, youve answered one of my questions.... Recently Wendi had a nightmare(under nightmare) and in comments I put up my own. Ive shopped around, cant find 'kittens' cant find 'hawks' but at least I know what the wrecked up car meant.....Towards the end of the dream Kman drove me to the movies in the bomb!

Hi Kleo,

Kittens - often refer to the awakening of an aspect of the feminine self, as yet un-developed.

It often translates in the waking world as new ideas and projects.

(I'll go and add this to the animals post... I thought I did already, will add it to Cats)

Movies are interesting, as is the old bomb (chuckle) better watch your health, me darling, or K-man, his?

Remember :

Two such as you with such a master speed,
Cannot be parted nor be swept away,
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar
