..and so to sleep, per chance to dream.

Body Parts : A - L

March 5th 2007 07:02

Remember them or not, we have dreams of body parts... every night.

Many people come to me with a disturbed frame of mind because their dreams have been filled with scenes of random body parts - arms and legs, heads and shoulders, or even teeth and hair. Always prominent in the dream in some way and sometimes, downright scary... ooh okay Bryn … very often dismembered too ...

Seconded only by buildings and journeys, body parts, make up one of the largest groups of dream symbols. Statistics reveal that you will probably dream of at least one body part, once within a standard night’s sleep. However. it's in recalling body parts that your memory will be the first to fade, unless a huge amount of emotion was wrapped around the ‘body part’ when you saw it in the dream.

This is a shame, because from the list below, you will soon start to see how much symbolic detail is stored in each part.

Generally speaking, Any Part of the Body, as well as the Body itself, when appearing in a dream, represents the individual and is their outward physical manifestation of all that they are, often through Ego, since being physical is the baby’s first experience of itself, the body forms the prime source of information.

Psychologically most experience is translated into bodily feeling, and therefore becomes a rich source of symbolism in dreams too, especially when emotions cannot be faced in everyday life.

A general ‘collective’ view of the body:

Upper Body – is a link to the mind and the spiritual aspects of the character.

Lower Body – represents the instincts and more emotional aspects of our character.

Conflict between lower and upper –
reflects the disharmony between mental faculties and instinctive behaviour.

The Right Side –
if prominent in the dream means we should take notice of the logical side of our personality.

The Left Side – indicates we need to be aware of our intuitive, creative side.

Becoming Fat – signifies a need to widen the scope of your activities in some way.

Uncomfortably Fat – indicates a fear of possibly taking on too much responsibility or not being equal to the task ahead of you.

~oOo~

The A-Z below is by no means definitive, or complete, but does cover most ‘parts’ that may occur in your dreams. Try to remember them and jot them down in your journal…

Happy deciphering…

Abdomen {stomach, belly} - An urgent need for you to focus on emotions and repressed feelings.

Ankle - Support and direction. Difficulties followed by success later. A friend is trying to help you secretly.

Anus (non-sexual) – [see ‘Dark Side of Sex’ for sexual connotations], otherwise this is a symbol of negative suppression and defence. It can mean childish behaviour and egotism need to be checked and often portend up coming quarrels, disappointments and disagreeable friends. Are you drawing them to you by acting childishly yourself?

Arms – Strength good defences, passionate commitment. Often seen in a dream portends victory over enemies. Can indicate a family quarrel?

Back – Some else’s – means you should identify the more private elements of your character. Other people may not want to share your thoughts right now.

Back – Your own – Can often indicate that jealousy surrounds you and that you may face opposition in love.

Turning Your Back – rejection of a particular feeling being experienced in the dream, also possibly in the waking life too.

Backbone –
Time to consider the main support structure in your life. Intellectually, this symbol asks you to consider the firmness of your character.

Blood [see ‘Dark Side of Sex’]

Breast (non sexual) – A need for nuturing, this dream can strangely often also mean that the dreamer would like to return to a time of infancy, when there was no responsibility. Sometimes such a dream presages loyal friendship and success in love.

Constipation – As in real life retention of this kind signifies an inability to let go of the past or of previous patterns of behaviour, literally your dream is saying you are up tight and need to make a big change.

Ear – In a dream can indicate trouble from unexpected source but big success with an intimate friend. Pay attention to your receptivity.

Excrement – In general a dream of body waste signifies that there may be an element of rebellion in the dreamers waking life. The subconscious may not have progressed beyond a feeling that anything to do with bodily functions is dirty and self-centred.

Playing with Excrement – represents anxiety about money and value, often because of a fear of responsibility.

Evacuation of Bowl – highlights a need to be free of worry and responsibility, often a deep need to be uninhibited.

If Excrement transforms into living animals – you are coming to terms with the fact that you are responsible for your impulses… [check the Animal List for further clarification – coming soon].

Eye – Observation and discrimination. It is also indicative of enlightenment and wisdom, protection and stability with connections to the power of light and ancient times. It often presages a congenial companion and good business deals.

Loss of Eyesight – signify’s a loss of clarity in daily affairs (right) loss of logic (left) loss of intuition.

Regaining the Eyesight – often indicates a return to the innocence and clear-mindedness of the child.

Eyelashes – This is an indication of allure in many guises. Friends may be cheating on you and there may be some delay in your business success.

Face – Always to do with identity, yours or someone else’s. Can often portend a warning of someone working against you. [Check other symbols].

Fingers – Collectively, fingers in dreams are about seeking perfection in order to reach the pinnacle of your chosen ambition.

The Separate fingers in dreams have very special significance and can help you understand where perfection can be sought and strengthened...

1st finger - growth and expansion
2nd finger - feelings of restrictions and confinement
3rd finger - the self and self-esteem
4th finger - communication

Hair – represents your strength and virility. It also deals with matters of attraction and sensuality. Dreaming of hair always warns that you not become careless in your personal affairs.

Combing Hair – attempting to untangle a particular attitude we have.

Having Hair Cut – trying to create order in our lives.

To be Cutting Someone Else’s Hair – you are putting something off. Is there a fear or doubt connected with your own sexuality?

Baldness – is about recognising your own intelligence.

Hands – signify power and creative and are perhaps the most expressive feature of the body in both the waking life and dreams.

A different object in each hand – Is there some conflict between beliefs and feelings?

A Hand On The Breast – signifies a submission.
Clasped Hands – union or friendship.

Clenched Hands – look out for a threat, heading your way.

Folded Hands – You are in need of a deep rest, take time now.

Hands Covering Eyes – Shame or horror.

Hands Crossed at Wrists –
suggests that you are bound in some way and cannot move forwards in your affairs.

The Open Hand – Justice will prevail.

Laying On Of Hands – healing and blessings heading your way, especially if the hands are on your neck.

Hands Placed Together – Are you feeling defenceless in your current situation?

Palms turned outwards – Expect a miracle.

Washing the hands – A successful rejection of guilt following accusation.

Wringing the Hands – Grief - a need to grieve?.

A Huge Hand [particularly from the sky] – You have been specially chosen in some way, or are about to be, for some special project, or mission.

Right Hand – the hand of ‘Power.’ if dominant in the dream.

Left Hand – is dominant, represents cheating.

Head – As the principle part of the body, and the seat of the life force, seeing a head in a dream, denotes power and wisdom. You should look carefully at the way you deal both with intelligence and folly. Something threatened can be avoided by intelligent action.

Bowed Head – Suggests a situation of supplication.

A Covered Head – Are you covering up your own intelligence or acknowledging somebody else’s superiority.

A Blow To The Head – Time to reconsider your actions in a particular situation.

Heart – A matter that should be considered with ‘feeling’ wisdom, rather than intellectual wisdom. It presages dignity and happy love and a time of great joy.

Heel – Think Achilles and watch for your Achilles Heel.

Hips – A dream of hips signifies pleasant work and good news.

Injured Hips – indicate misplaced confidence in a mate and possible losses to the family.

Jaw – Self expression, often relentless anger. On an esoteric level, dreams of the jaw often indicate the opening to the underworld.

Joints - Connection. Joints are associated with favourable things. Happiness and domestic joy. Change for the better and plenty of money.

Kidneys – As organs of elimination, dreaming of kidneys signifies a need for cleansing. Perhaps fasting, exercise and diet need looking at, perhaps your social circle?

Knees – Flexibility and humility. Dreams of knees can augur sickness and humiliation.

Stiff Knees – Indicate a need to look into matters of inflexibility of ego and a lack of emotional commitment.

Legs - Often as a cell memory from growth in the womb, legs often represent sexuality and fears associated with gender issues.

Healthy Leg –
represents support, movement, joy and happiness. To see them in a dream can indicate a great step forward can now be taken in your life.

A Bad Leg – indicates that you need to look at your occupation as it could be more profitable.

Limbs [Dismembered] - Quite literally mean we are being torn apart. Often it is a sign that you must restructure your life and begin again. Look at your life, this dream is saying you are being threatened to the core of your existence. Sort out your priorities, now.

Lips – [See Sexual Dream Symbols]

Liver – Irritability and suppressed anger. This dream will often occur as a warning of unpleasant times and the inability to attain the comforts that are necessary to those looking to you for subsistence.

Lungs – In Chinese medicine the lungs represent grief. In dreams they more involved in decision making and spiritually they represent the seat of righteousness. You need to find in what ways are you ready to expand outside your normal life because up to now there was only disappointment in desires.

Last night I DID!!
I dont remember the dream itself, but last night I dreamed of Dean from Supernatural. Not the actor who plays him, the man himself. I was watching it before I went to bed, so no real surprises, but lately Ive had UNBELIEVEBLY vivid dreams of having sex with powerful male characters, (eg, Paul Robinson from neighbors, or his son, Robert, Or Cam, Or BOTH) but last night I dont remember the dream - as in, place or what happened or a flow of time - but I woke up remembering all parts of dean with his shirt off. His muscular arms, his chest, his abs, all the beautifully sculpted parts of his upper body and that mystically contrived face.
My interpretation? My man is beautiful, or I should say, potentially beautiful. Hes very tall, but not muscular. His skin is icy white, his arms flabby with no contours, gut quickly spreading into a keg, big chest beginning to look suspiciosly like man boobs. Any woman trying to get pregnant would be envious of his hips. I have more muscles than he does. My interpretation is very simple - I want him to look like that! I feel guilty and terrible, that I would be more attracted, more interested in sex if he could tone up.
A more complex interpretation? Im in love with power, I want to covet it. I want HIM to be an illusion of power like these characters Im dreaming of. They have aspects about them I want to intergrate into him.
But what lovely images to have in my mind on waking....Those tan lovely strong arms just bulging with muscle going around me, firm chest and sculpted belly...A lovely thought to wake up to, wracked with period pain and that draining depression that comes with it...
Dreams are always vivid and confusing at this time!

Dear Norm,

..hmmm, no not without humour at all... my suggestion for waking body parts .. as they float on through? Look them up anyway, the meanings will still be relevant and may prove just as revealing...

now I'm smiling at your comment ...

Hi Mis,

... sorry to hear it... there is truly nothing worse in my book, than a lack of sleep.

Maybe some 'real body part' therapy?

You could visit the chemist and Rest-a-bit with Restavite ... don't take more than half a tablet though... never the recommended 2.

Hoping you sleep soon,

Dear Kleo,

You dream sounds very normal for someone who is going through huge changes in her life at the moment. In my previous post you would have realised that powerful dreams of passionate sex with the opposite sex are nothing more than your need to integrate, the more assertive positive aspects of your own personality.

The traditionally ‘male’ qualities of assertiveness and logic are trying to manifest within you…

Are you living in a situation where you have little or no control over your decisions?

The body parts you dreamed off, will reveal which aspects of your nature you are in desperate need of developing –

strong arms - the ability to vanquish your enemy – possibly a family member? Arms also reveal a need to commit to some degree, don’t they – perhaps a decision regarding your relationship… involving the logical, assertive side of your brain?

Upper body – all aspects of the spiritual and mental faculties … waging war here with the Lower Body during the sexual act itself, suggesting a strong clash of spiritual ideals crashing against emotional conflicts and instincts...

Do you feel that you need to take stock of a runaway situation?

Abdomen – again your subconscious asks you to focus on your emotions and repressed feelings… have you chosen a male you are physically repulsed by on purpose?
~

If I didn’t know better Kleo, I’d say that you are being coerced and forced into ways of thinking and behaviour that are not true to your desires and instincts. Not just by family and friends, but by society in general…

And that takes me to your other dream, which I shall go and do a more in-depth interpretation on now, whilst I’m on the subject and have a little time spare…

I hope this helps and I'll see you over on the other post...

*peace*

Utterly spot on Lilla. I am in no control at the moment. Im running the house because Im not working, but my mum and man are controlling everything else - Im utterly at their whim because they are paying my various bills.
I feel this situation is out of control and running away with us all. Im desperately trying to get a bridle on it.
Aaah, this ones interesting! When my man and I got together 7 years ago, he was the only (and I do mean, the ONE AND ONLY) male I had EVER been attracted to! Before him Id only been attracted to GIRLS despite only having male lovers. When I saw this guy I suddenly GOT IT, what all the girls rave about when they look at boys. I was instantly and POWERFULLY attracted. Problem is, over 7 years hes getting older and fatter, while Im taking age by the balls and getting fitter and trimmer. He refuses to engage in self improvement. His father is huge, an alchoholic and a diabetic. Im terrified hes going the same way.
And, my darling, I have ALWAYS felt coercsed by friends, family, society to conform, still, I refuse! The older I get, the more aspects intergrate to the norm, but Im fighting it....I ant to keep my weirdeness!
Thankyou so much for being a mum to me....Listening to my rambles, giving me advice...I appreciate it more than you know, I think. Everyday I cant wait to get back here and see all of you!

Very Interesting stuff,

Where as what you see in a dream usually is far removed from the real world, there seems to be a logic to what the body parts mean.

don't worry I'm missing replies myself Lilla... I love your dream posts. I see you have a new one up that I`m going to head over to check out. Can I make a request for a future date? Dreaming about dreaming? And visiting other people in dreams?
I prefer to find info on your posts because I have looked at some other sites online and don`t quite fall into their line of thinking with their explanations....

have a great break in Coffs Harbour...

Does hair falling out just mean warning against the actual meaning of hair?

Ash,

forgive the delay - I still don;t get all my notifications - oy vey!

Hair falling out genrally just means a fear or actual loss of strength in a situation, either of position or of genuine psychic attack.

It can be about having your power used against you too (or a fear of that happening) keeping in mind, that generally ~ we either create what we fear the most, or fear it becuase we are aware it's happening, either way... just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone is not out to get you *chuckle*

Hope it sorted itself out sweet.

Lovelies...xx

Norm,

It has dawned on me - some time later - and in answer to your comment... that the body itself is not without humour in my view, altogether.

Quite a comical thing in it's poetic beauty, when considered in it's own light (and shade)...
